Hi all!

I’m working on a company called Trilobio to make fully automated biology accessible to everyone. With access to this technology, scientists can share experiments as code that runs the same way on everyone’s fully automated lab, helping make synthetic biology more reproducible. 

More specifically, we are building robotic modules that remove the need for expensive robotic integrators to achieve fully automated biology. Our modules snap together like LEGOs and can instantly transfer materials between each other. No need to hire a robotic integrator to put a robot arm between two isolated machines.  By building each module ourselves, we can make them really affordable too. Our first module has a robot arm in it which normally costs $30k off-the-shelf. By building this arm ourselves, we’re able to reduce the price to $600. 

We’re also building an App Store that runs on our modules, so instead of telling your robotic  modules to move liquid from one tube to the next, you can tell your modules to assemble a desired DNA sequence for you, or sequence an organism without needing to code at all. 

I wanted to share some of our progress! We’ve finished our prototype for our first automation module. The goal is for this module to be able to pipette from 0uL - 1000uL, move plates, open and close tubes, autocalibrate, and to reach into other modules to set up its own deck. It cost us ~$1k to build. Check out our booth at Synbiobeta!

The first app we’re working on is the biofoundry app. Keoni Gandall, one of our co-founders, wrote code that allowed for 700 different DNA sequences to be properly assembled in a week on existing robots with the help of just one lab tech. For reference, Ginkgo Bioworks assembles 750 DNA sequences a week. We’re working on building a user interface for this code and transitioning it to our own robotic modules so we can provide it as our first plug-and-play app to run on our first automation module.
